Local volunteers were honoured at the annual B&NES Council Chairman’s Community Awards on Thursday, 4th February.

The awards, hosted by Council Chairman, Cllr Ian Gilchrist, honoured those nominated by members of the public, which this year, saw 106 nominations for voluntary work across the community.

Local winners at the awards included Robin Tanner, Chairman of Parkinson’s UK Bath and District Branch, who received Volunteer Leader of the Year. Highly Commended went to Keith Pope and Jonathan Proctor, who volunteer at Leonard Cheshire Home in Timsbury.

The Young Volunteer of the Year Award went to Charlie Bryant, who has been

volunteering in Paulton for a number of years. The Award follows from Charlie’s earlier success with the Royal Horticultural Society that acknowledged his involvement with flower displays at the War Memorial, cemetery and

village centre, and his own ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’

project which received an award, presented by Barry Cruse MBE in October 2015.

Former Member of Youth Parliament for B&NES, Edward Joseph, from Writhlington, was awarded the Chairman’s Special Award. Edward has campaigned for better mental health services and gender equality, as well as highlighting the importance of young people in local democracy.

Some of the other winners on the night included the Bath Soup Run, the Volunteer Mentors of Mentoring Plus, the Senior In Care Council at Off the Record, Keynsham Wombles, Betty White, who received Good Neighbour of the Year, Edward Fairnington, who won Young Volunteer Leader, Ann Griffin, who won Volunteer of the Year, Dorothy Whichelow, who received Highly Commended Volunteer of the Year, Jude Vale and Joe Lomax, who received Carer and Young Carer of the Year and Joan Pearce, who was awarded the new Peter Duppa Miller Lifetime Achievement Award.
