PUPILS and staff at Peasedown Primary School are celebrating this week after achieving the highest possible accreditation in a recent inspection.
The school has been re-awarded, for the second time in a row, a Platinum Award for their Outdoor Play and Learning curriculum (or OPAL).
OPAL is a nationally recognised programme designed to help schools significantly improve the quality of play for children by making better use of outdoor space, time, and everyday resources. It encourages a whole-school approach to play, promoting creativity, physical activity, and emotional well-being through enriched outdoor environments.
Headteacher, Ruth Noall, said: “OPAL, Outdoor Play And Learning, makes the use of toys and equipment to enhance children’s learning and play. Our OPAL initiative enables children to be creative and adventurous with loose bits and bobs. Whether it is plastic milk crates, traffic cones, wooden spoons, old brooms and buckets – we can make use of them and encourage children to make the most of playing outside.”
Creative outdoor play allows children to develop self-confidence, independence and self-esteem. They also become aware of limits, boundaries and challenge in their play. When children are used to playing outdoors, they are more likely to try new activities too.
Speaking after the award was presented to the school, Helen Easton, the accreditor, said:“Congratulations on your accreditation Platinum Award. It was wonderful to see your play offer still in full swing. You continue to be a beacon to other schools on how to enrich your play environment and culture.”
Peasedown St Primary School is well known locally for its extra-curricular and enrichment activities. The school strives for children to develop as well-rounded, reflective and responsible citizens.
