PUPILS at Peasedown St John Primary School marked harvest with a week of celebrations, holding three separate services across the community to reflect on themes of sharing, fairness and kindness.
In total, the school’s 400 pupils packed out three harvest festivals over a five-day period, with pre-school and Reception-aged children holding their service in the school hall, where Rev Rachel Howlett, St John’s curate, led a short reflective talk about sharing not only what we have but also a smile.
Year 1 and Year 2 pupils held their service at the Methodist Church, where Rev David Winstanley delivered a reflective address on the theme of fairness, explaining that when sharing a banana, one should not give one person the fruit and another the skin.
Years 3, 4 and 5 held their service in St John's Church where Rev Matthew Street led a short reflective talk about sowing seeds that will produce kindness.
School headteacher, Ruth Noall, said:“The theme for this year's Harvest Festivals was sharing, fairness and kindness, and also for giving thanks for the food and shelter many of us have.
“What made this year’s celebrations extra special was that we held three Harvest festivals in three different locations.
“Over the course of the week, children also brought donations to school for The Nest Project, the previous week Vix Blythe from the project had visited school to explain the work of the project and how we could help babies, young children and new mothers in our area by donating toiletries. The donations received were amazing!”
In all three services, the children sang a selection of harvest songs, recited poetry, and shared examples of their harvest-themed artwork, which they had created in class. The Key Stage 2 orchestra also performed at the St John’s Church service, adding a musical highlight to the week’s celebrations.
