Somer Valley FM have launched the 'Live Local', a new initiative that showcases the area's young musical talent.
On Friday, 8th March, the Methodist Centre in Midsomer Norton hosted the first of four Live Locals that will lead up to a live music stage at the town's Fayre Day on Saturday, 22nd June.
The first Live Local starred Writhlington-based band, Fyrefight, City of Bath College students, Too Much Lipstick, and Norton Hill year 13 student, Sam Evans. All bands who participate in the project will get the chance to spend three hours recording their work in PEOPLE charity's recording studio located at the top of Midsomer Norton's High Street. Somer Valley FM will play the recordings to promote the bands across the region, helping them build their audiences.
The radio station's Manager, Dom Chambers, said, "This is a real cross community effort with local radio working with the Methodist Church, PEOPLE charity and Midsomer Norton B&NES Councillors, who are funding this through the Ward Fund scheme. It is a fantastic part of my job to see how much young musical talent there is in the area. I am delighted that we have a new venue to showcase this talent and give teenagers the chance to enjoy great live music for free."
Eighteen-year-old Jay Cook, from the band, With What Remains, said in a recent radio interview: "There should definitely be more venues for young, up-and-coming acts in Midsomer Norton, because there are lots of good bands starting out. There are some really good musicians coming up through the ranks which people aren't getting to hear because there aren't any places to play, so I think this project will be a benefit to the area."
The events, which target a youth audience of thirteen to seventeen-year-olds, are technically organised by Somer Valley FM's apprentice, Luke Barnes. Luke, sixteen, says: "It was really nice to see people of my age doing something for fun on a Friday night, rather than hanging around on the street."
The next Live Local will be held in the Methodist Centre on Friday, 19th April.
