Plans to plant a community orchard and even a vineyard were discussed at Radstock Town Council’s meeting on Monday night, as Councillors have been looking at community infrastructure funding which will be coming from local housing developments, to be used for the allotments and Southfields recreation area.

Other ideas put forward have been an outdoor gym at Southfields, raised beds and a toilet for allotment holders. Councillors voted to support the proposals.

The Town Council also appealed for nominations for the Making a Difference Awards and voted to move £2,000 out of its events budget to allow for a new Christmas event for Senior Citizens, alongside housing and support organisation, Curo, for up to 125 people living in sheltered housing accommodation in the area.

Changes to local bus services were also discussed, with Cllr Currie promising to update Councillors and calling for community buses or operations such as Dial-a-Ride to help transfer passengers to connecting services.

The Town Council will also be considering buying the area’s red heritage telephone boxes for £1 each – figures from BT show that Haydon and Lower Whitelands’ boxes have not been used at all in the past twelve months.
