Former South West Labour MP Dan Norris has been selected as the Labour candidate for West of England Metro Mayor. Norris, who was the Labour MP for Wansdyke (now North East Somerset) from 1997 until 2010, defeated Bristol Labour Councillor, Helen Godwin, in a ballot of local Party members.

He will challenge Conservative incumbent Tim Bowles in the election next May. Reacting to his selection, Dan Norris said: “I’m delighted to have been selected as Labour’s candidate for West of England Metro Mayor, and would like to thank all those that voted for me. I would also like to congratulate Helen [Godwin] on a fair and well-fought campaign.

“These truly are uncertain times – many people are feeling let down by the Conservatives and are worried about their health, education and livelihoods. I’m looking forward to setting out my positive vision for the area.”
