The local branch of the Royal British Legion, in conjunction with Midsomer Norton Town Council, has decided to commemorate the Centenary of the end of hostilities in the First World War with a difference this year.

This took the form of fixing large poppies to the railings along the river in Midsomer Norton High Street, one for each local serviceman who perished in the two World Wars and whose name appears on the Town’s War Memorial.

There are 111 names on the Memorial, however, an extra one has been added for a serviceman who suffered wounds in France and was shipped home, but subsequently died of his injuries. He is included on a roll of honour in Norwich Cathedral ,as this was the location of his unit. His death was particularly poignant, as he died on 11th November, 1918. His name is Sapper Arthur Coward and his grave is at Writhlington.

Members of the local branch of the Royal British Legion put up the poppies – pictured is member Geoff Wilson, and it is envisaged that they will be displayed each year.

The Mendip Male Voice Choir will be holding a Remembrance Concert at St John’s Church at 7.30 p.m. on Saturday, 10th November. There will be no entrance fee, but a retiring collection instead.
