THE world’s largest marathon had plenty of local interest as runners from Somer Athletic Club took on the streets of London for the 2026 marathon.
Somer AC’s affiliation with England Athletics gave a coveted place in this year’s iconic event to Anne Garnish who in 2023 claimed she would never run a marathon again.
After months of training, she proudly pulled on her black and yellow vest once again, joining tens of thousands of runners who had descended on London.
Crossing the finish line in a highly respectable 4 hours, 54 minutes and 24 seconds, she successfully overcame the famous 26.2-mile course, warmer-than-expected weather, and a painful knee issue that threatened to derail her race.
Understandably proud of her achievement, Anne said: “I really enjoyed it – which was genuinely one of my goals. Whilst I didn’t make my goal time of 4:41, I am so pleased and grateful to the club for the opportunity.”
Anne’s marathon wasn’t without drama. After a strong start, things became difficult around mile 15 when her right knee began to cause serious problems. She explained: “The weather was warmer and sunnier than anticipated, or trained for, but all was going well until about 15 miles when my right knee began hurting.
“After a physio stop, I walked for the next few kilometres before it eased off enough to run.”
A spokesperson for the Club said: “With characteristic Somerset determination, she pushed through to the finish and achieved what mattered most to her.”
Founded in 1981, Somer Athletic Club based in Radstock welcomes runners of all abilities. The club trains twice weekly and offers structured coaching, encouragement and plenty of community spirit.
Anne added: “For anyone not sure whether to throw their name into the club ballot next year: do it! It is so much more than just that one day in April.”
