RESIDENT Jack Rugg from Somer Valley House care home in Midsomer Norton recently celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by family, friends, and fellow residents.
Born and bred in Bath, Jack joined the Royal Navy at 16, serving as a leading stoker during the Second World War. His service took him around the globe, and he fondly recalls the excitement of arriving in Australia for the first time, one of many cherished memories from his years at sea.
After returning from service, Jack married Jean, the love of his life, in 1950, and together they raised two sons, Nigel and Alan. He often says his greatest achievements were marrying Jean and raising his family.
To mark his centenary, Somer Valley House hosted a special celebration complete with a buffet and live entertainment by singers ‘Once Upon a Dream’ for Jack, his family, and his friends.
Jack said: “I was surprised to see the number of decorations and all of my family and friends, I was so pleased it nearly knocked my socks off. It was the best birthday I could have asked for and I’d like to thank everyone who made it so special.”
Emma Curtain, front of house manager at Somer Valley House, added, “It was our absolute privilege to celebrate this incredible milestone with Jack. He was donned the ‘Birthday King’ for the day!”
