Midsomer Norton Station which is on the old Somerset and Dorset Railway Line, has a preserved Pill Box and Anderson shelter as part of their heritage scene.
The Anderson shelter has been looking very sad lately due to priority being given to painting the boundary fencing. Volunteers at the station have been very pleased with the teams of Year 9 students from Writhlington school, who have come over every week to help out at the station.
Grounds and Gardens Manager, Dave Rogers, is very impressed with the work ethic of the volunteer teams from Writhlington School.
He said: “The shelter was in a bit of a state when the students started work. We have been very impressed by the way they just got down and tackled those brambles and then filled all the sand bags, working as a team. We would like to thank all the students who have come to help over the last few weeks.”
The volunteer Year 9s have de-structured and rebuilt the shelter down to its roof. Firstly, the brambles were cleared, then the old sand bags were removed which exposed damage to the underlying structure. The Grounds Team brought up some old sleepers and shored up the foundations. Then the Writhlington team got to work levelling the ground and refilling and replacing the sand bags.
Visitors can see the results of their labours on Sundays and Mondays when the station at Midsomer Norton is open from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. After the Easter Special weekend, there will be additional Diesel train rides on Sunday, 10th April and Sunday, 1st May.
