Midsomer Norton Sixth Form student, Karyn Farrell, who overcame a rare form of cancer and has been fundraising ever since, has recently organised a sponsored spinathon with members of staff at Somervale School as part of her latest effort.
The spinathon saw staff and students participating in four hours of spinning at
Midsomer Norton Leisure Centre on Saturday, 26th November to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Karyn said: “In April 2015, I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in my saliva gland; epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma. After two surgeries, I was given the all clear, and that was when I decided to raise money for Cancer Research UK. So far, I have raised £1,500, not counting the money I have raised for the Spinathon.”
Past events that Karyn has organised include a concert at Somervale School, along with a mufti day, where students paid £1 to wear their own clothes to school. She also
organised a mufti day with Midsomer Norton Primary School, which she attended before Somervale School.
She said: “In the future, I plan to organise another concert and a few more mufti days, possibly including more schools in the area. I am also thinking about organising a golfing day, in which people will pay to play and local businesses will sponsor
specific holes.”
So far, the spinathon has raised £250, with more money coming in that still needs to be counted.
