Last week, Emma Parker completed a 21-mile sponsored walk from Peasedown St John to the top of Glastonbury Tor, carrying a rucksack full of books. Emma’s efforts are thanks to Journal readers, who donated a phenomenal amount of books, so many that she had an extra challenge to raise enough money to send them all. There are fifteen boxes of locally donated books which will now be going to the girls and youths she worked with whilst volunteering with Create Change in Ghana last year.

Emma said: “Thank you to everyone who sponsored me and to the many well-wishers I met on the way, especially the kind man called Sam, who stopped to give me a hot chocolate and an apple pie. I would also like to say thank you to everyone who donated the books, entered the competition, attended the quiz and donated. Finally, a big thank you to Mandy and Mark, who kindly let me host the charity quiz at their pub, the Apple Tree Inn, Shoscombe.”

Combined with the money raised from the ‘guess how many books’ competition and the book-themed pub quiz, Emma has reached her fundraising target, which means all 786 books will be sent to the girls supported by Create Change in Ghana. Well done to Lee Crowther Russell, who won the competition and guessed the exact number of books donated.

The books will be shipped from the UK in March and will arrive in Northern Ghana by the end of April. Thanks to everyone’s help and support, hundreds of children will be able to enjoy, cherish and learn from these beautiful books.
