Terry and Annette Andrews, who are celebrating their fourteenth year at the shop, wanted to do something special to mark the occasion and whilst attending Journal Editor, Becky Brooks' charity night, held at Mardons Social Club in May, the couple decided they had found their cause.
Becky and fellow trekker, Karen Burge, from Midsomer Norton, will be joining 28 other participants to spend six days trekking the Great Wall of China for up to eight hours a day in aid of the RUH's pioneering new Cancer Centre.
The pair had a target of £3,100 to raise each and inbetween training, have been busy organising charity nights, quizzes, craft fairs and even selling their possessions at car boot sales.
Since Becky's charity night, which raised over £1,400, Terry and Annette have been busy asking traders and friends if they will donate raffle prizes for another grand draw. They have done an amazing job – securing top prizes of a hot air balloon ride, a Mulberry handbag and a bike from Halfords.
Becky said: "I have been overwhelmed by the response that Terry and Annette have had to their appeal for prizes. A huge thank you to all of the businesses who have donated – to Casswells, Oliver Joseph, Pampered Pets, Docky's, Price Jewellers, Sainsbury's, The Entertainer, Haskins, The Old Down Inn, New Inn at Farmborough, U Beauty, Lemans, The Green Shop, Whistones, Michael Gould and anyone I have left out – it really is appreciated."
Other prizes include, a huge Party Plus sweet cake (pictured), vouchers for many of the businesses mentioned, a halogen oven, portable barbecue, five family cinema tickets for Midsomer Norton's Palladium at the Town Hall, a Docky's Hamper, gift packs from Butcombe and Lilley's Cider, paintings by Roger Jones and David Fisher and much, much more! Most of the prizes are available to view in the window at Party Plus.
The raffle will be drawn at a special night at Welton Rovers, organised by Terry and Annette, on Friday, 29th August, starting at 8 p.m., with music from The All Stars, Cliff Clarke and Dangerous Brian, who will be doing a DJ set. Tickets are on sale now at Party Plus and raffle tickets can also be bought at the shop, from The Journal office, Casswells, The New Inn, Farmborough, and The Old Down Inn.
"Karen and I are now really busy getting fit for this challenge, as we have both reached, or are very close to, our targets. Everything else will be a bonus and we both agree that we may never do anything on this scale again, so I am so grateful to Terry and Annette for taking this cause into their hearts and helping me raise even more for the RUH", said Becky.
"A big thank you to everyone who has supported us both so far – I owe particular thanks to Mardons, who have hosted two events for me and everyone who was involved with those – to Dave Stock and quizgoers at the Old Down Inn, to the many people who have bought cakes, and my wonderful colleagues at The Journal. My current total stands at £4,200 and it would be wonderful to raise as much as we possibly can for this incredibly important facility, which will give local people the best chance of fighting cancer."
Becky and Karen leave for their challenge on 4th September, helping the hospital in its efforts to raise £8.5 million towards building a pioneering new Cancer Centre for the RUH, which it is hoped will be operational by 2017.
