Peasedown St John Parish Council hosted an event on Remembrance Sunday evening to commemorate the centenary of the ending of World War I.
A spectacular turnout of residents participated in remembering and giving thanks to those who fought in the War.
The local primary school children sang and read poetry, with two short films informing about the end of the war and various readings of ‘letters from the trenches’.
The Last Post was played and a two-minute silence held, along with a reading of ‘Tribute to the Millions’ in honour of those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we can enjoy the peace and freedom we have today.
Finally, Captain Newman, a serving member of the armed forces with close links to the village, lit the beacon.
Refreshments were served afterwards by members of Peasedown Women’s Institute. Chair of the Council, Cllr Kathy Thomas, said: “It was an excellent event, and we thank all of those members of the community who helped to make it so successful, particularly the schoolchildren, who demonstrated the knowledge they had acquired about the War and the sacrifices made, which, after 100 years, helps us to continue to appreciate how lucky we are today. Also, to St John’s Church for providing the audio-visual support.”
