THE Somerset & Dorset Railway in Midsomer Norton held a celebration of 1940s nostalgia over the first May weekend.

Activities at the station included displays and re-enactors with entertainment creating a fantastic atmosphere. Central to the weekend was the unveiling of a plaque to honour the men of the Midsomer Norton Home Guard.

Years of research undertaken by Alan Readhead into the members of the Home Guard, has helped to identify the names of those who served alongside his father Lt Bill Readhead.

Visitors had to avoid the garden by the platform as “an unexplored bomb” was being recovered at the 1940s re-enactment event.

The plaque to the men was unveiled by Alan Readhead and Col Steve Kendall MBE, Commandant of the Somerset Army Cadets attended by a number of cadets. The plaque will be displayed in the preserved pillbox at the station for all to view.
