PLANS for a new skatepark in Mary Baily playing field in Frome are set to move forward after receiving approval from Frome Town Council, with members considering concerns as well as strong local support.

At the meeting on Wednesday, August 27, the discussion was passionate, with some concerns raised about the impact of the proposals on girls’ use of the park. Councillors responded by reaffirming their commitment to ensuring the new facility is inclusive and accessible to all.

It was the voices of young people that stood out, with a strong turnout in the council chamber, as members of the local community spoke with conviction about why a modern, well-designed skatepark is important to them.

One young skater Ed said:“The skatepark is where we learn and progress. We also support each other. It gives us freedom but also community.”

Councillors voted to proceed with the project, approving plans to relocate the skatepark near the younger children’s play area – more than 70 metres from the nearest homes – with a commitment to provide safety features built into the design to separate the two spaces whilst ensuring that it is as accessible as possible.

Cllr Polly Lamb said: “As part of the steering group looking at this project I am so delighted that this project has been approved. It was clear at the meeting just how much people care about Mary Baily and the skatepark.”

The skatepark is projected to cost up to £400,000, with fundraising set to commence this autumn. Professional fundraising expertise will be bought in to assist in securing grants and community contributions, supported by both the council and the local skating community.

The community will play a central role in designing the new skatepark. Those interested in contributing or suggesting fundraising ideas can contact the Frome Skatepark Project: https://fromeskateparkproj.wixsite.com/frome-skatepark-proj
