One reader has expressed their disappointment in the local infrastructure following a recent road closure on Wells Hill last weekend.

Dear Editor,

With reference to the letter last week from Eleanor Jackson, I too was somewhat surprised with the roadworks at the bottom of Wells Hill that appeared last Saturday morning.

We didn’t know why so many vehicles were coming down Welton Road and then turning right to go along Somervale Road.

From around 7am  it was totally chaotic down the road. Many vehicles were coming from the Westfield direction, whilst others were coming from Radstock Road and Radstock Town centre. The latter taking the the sharp turn from Somervale Road and up Welton Road meeting the increased traffic going down.

The traffic diversion notice on the B&NES website directed traffic via Midsomer Norton, Church Lane and Radstock Road. Therefore a significant proportion of drivers were ignoring the diversion signs. Welton Road has many parked cars, no pavement and is used daily by quite a few speeding drivers (the speed limit is 20mph.) Bearing these issues in mind Welton Road is a totally inappropriate road for a diversion whether official or otherwise.

Around four years ago we petitioned B&NES and our local Councillors to try and alleviate the problems with traffic in Welton Road. To date nothing has happened. It just seems that it can conveniently be used as a relief road when there is a problem in the roads nearby.

So I would say to Councillor Jackson and Robin Moss it’s about time something was done about it!
