The full interview can be found at https://www.spreaker.com/show/sounds-of-the-sea. The interview is currently being serialised in The Journal. This week Dave talks about Radstock’s iconic Sounds of the Sea song.

It actually stems from a musical song called Son’s of the Sea, which dates back to the early 1800s. And whilst I've got no actual record, I suggest what's happened is if you look through the old newspaper reports, you'll see a lot of fundraising events for Radstock Football Club.

On occasions, we've gone from football matches played between the 'muffers' and the 'duffers', to games played on Christmas morning where it was the amount of beer you could drink that decided whether you could perform later in the game or had to go off and sober up, to musical events and musical soirees that were held in the Victoria Hall. Some of them were definitely focussed on musical songs.

Now, because the words in Sounds of the Sea, with the bobbing up and down like this, 'you won't beat the boys from -' and then we put in 'Radstock Town', or the lads put in Radstock Town. It was building the ships - it's all about industry, and I think it's come from the fact that it's got a singalong-able song, and the supporters just picked up on it over the years. Like I say, you can still, believe it or not, listen to ‘Sons of the Sea’ on YouTube. If you Google ‘Sons of the Sea’ on YouTube, you will get somebody or other giving you a rendition of what that's all about.

Next week, we conclude our coverage of Dave’s interview by hearing about his hopes for the future of Radstock Town.
