Welton's Toolstation Western League Division One match at Devizes was called off twenty minutes after the scheduled kick-off time of 3 p.m. Players and officials arrived at the ground at 1.30 p.m. and the referee, Mr Lucas, deemed that the pitch was playable and gave the go-ahead for the match.
At 2.30 p.m., he and his two assistants were seen in one of the goalmouths where they spent the next twenty minutes examining the goalmouth area. A request was then made to Devizes officials for more sand, but as they had used all their supplies up on the pitch already, an official was despatched to bring in more sand that duly arrived at 3.10 p.m. and was put on the contentious area in the goalmouth.
Both sets of players and officials from Welton and Devizes wanted the game to go ahead and thought the pitch was playable.
However, after another ten minutes of deliberation, the referee called the game off, much to the consternation of the large numbers of the Green Army who had made the trip and the local supporters. The game is rescheduled for Tuesday, 18th February at 7.30 p.m.
