Great Britain’s Junior Trampoline Gymnast, Corey Walkes, is celebrating his second international Gold medal win of 2018. After a successful competition in Portugal in February, Corey, who is studying for his A levels at Beechen Cliff Sixth Form in Bath, continued to build on his progress by taking the Gold in the first Dutch Trampoline Open 2018 held in Alkmaar in the Netherlands.
Corey, who is coached by International Performance Coach, Sue Bramble, at Quayside Trampoline and Gymnastics Club in Bridgwater, was representing Great Britain alongside his team mate, Peter Buravytskiy, in the 17–21 men’s age group; the first time he has competed in this older age group.
Corey excelled his qualification routines into the final, with a massive 56.470 score, much to the recognition of the dutch commentators, who recognised his jump height, routine difficulty and his calmness in his moves.
Corey says: “It’s been a successful weekend in Holland, and now I am focusing on keeping up the momentum ready for the Europeans.”
Sue Bramble, Head Coach at Quayside, is twice as proud, as both Corey and Quayside’s Senior Great Britain trampolinist, Laura Gallagher, have been selected and are set to fly out to Azerbaijan next week to compete for Great Britain in the prestigious 26th European Trampoline, Tumbling and Double Mini Trampoline Championships held in the capital city of Baku.
Sue, will be flying out to support both her gymnasts, said: “I am immensely proud of Laura and Corey, who have both been focusing on their preparation training, and I am looking forward to watching them compete in this major international event in our trampoline calendar.”
Quayside’s Laura Gallagher, who lives in Bridgwater, will be representing Great Britain both as an individual and as part of the four strong Senior GBR Ladies team. Laura is the reigning 2017/2018 British Senior Ladies Champion, and is set to compete in both the team and individual rounds in this major bi-annual event that sees Europe’s top gymnasts battle it out to be crowned European Champions!
Corey, who has just turned seventeen, will be representing Great Britain, competing both individually and as part of the four-strong Junior Men’s team in Baku.
Corey lives with? his family in Radstock and travels up to five days a week to train at Quayside, which is based at the Luxon Centre in Bridgwater.? ?
The name of the centre was chosen as a tribute to one of Great Britain’s greatest trampoline gymnasts, Paul Luxon, and the club is now making its own history on the trampoline gymnastics ?world ?stage.
You can follow Corey and Laura’s progress alongside the rest of the Great Britain team both on the British Gymnastics website and via Quayside’s Facebook page who will share the link to watch the action live (remembering the four-hour ahead time difference!).
