Mendip Hockey Ladies’ Seconds kicked off their season with their first match on their new home pitch at St Gregory’s School in Bath, and were to face Bath Buccaneers.

The game started off fairly even, with both teams having spells of possession and creating some attacking chances. The Mendip defence were able to soak up the early pressure, with centrebacks, Kate Penn and Sarah Whittaker, holding their own and putting in tackle after tackle.

Despite this, the visitors were the first to find the back of the net to give themselves the lead. This did not deter Mendip, and they quickly found a reply. The goal came from a great through-ball by Captain, Jackie Browning, which Connie Glover got on the end of and deflected it over the keeper and into the goal. Bath ‘Buccs’ were able to put themselves in the lead again before half-time, and went into the break 2–1 up.

Mendip started the second half strongly, and got themselves a second goal in the first five minutes. A true team goal, the ball was passed fluently up the pitch and it was Glover again who finished the move off and slotted the ball home.

Mendip keeper, Oenone Bodman-Harris, was extremely strong in goal and pulled off numerous impressive saves to stop the visitors in their tracks, gaining herself Player of the Match in the process. As the game went on, Mendip began to tire, and this allowed Bath more space and time on the ball, and they managed to score three more goals to leave the final score at 5–2.

Mendip travel to Warminster next week to play their second friendly match against West Wilts.
