The final round of away social matches for 2014 for the Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club went the same way as most of its predecessors.
The longer courses have proved difficult for members whose handicaps are based on the shorter challenges of Fosseway.
The 4.5–1.5 reverse at Woodspring was, in fact, a distinct improvement on last year, when the team failed to register a single point. Pete Fitch and John Appleton led the way, finishing one up in their match, while John Wighton and Malcolm Tucker halved their game.
Bill Lester and Reg Curtis were always in their contest before eventually going down 2&1, but the other three matches saw comfortable wins for the Bristol pairings. Cyril Blacker and Gerry Rowell were beaten 6&4, Captain Ray Lake and John Bendle lost 7&6, while Howard Nowell and Terry Button met a pair at the top of their game and went down 9&7. There was consolation for Nowell, however, as he won some golf balls for being nearest the pin on the short par three.
The away match at Frome was the usual enjoyable day out, but, sadly, Fosseway failed to register a point. Barry Dugmore, playing his first social match for Fosseway, faced former club mates and in partnership with Wighton, came close to a positive result, only losing one down after a see-saw contest.
Acting Captain, Blacker, was paired with Geoff Hallett and although they lost 5&4, Blacker was another to win nearest the pin. Nowell and Tucker lost 3&2, Rowell and Bob Smith were beaten 4&3, Button and Curtis went down 6&5, while Fitch and Appleton were unable to repeat their heroics at Woodspring, going down 5&3.
This Thursday, Fosseway are due to host Cannington, after the match was postponed earlier in the season through bad weather.
