What an enjoyable weekend at Purnell Bowls Club – beginning with a home friendly against Frome Park. Because the home team had spare players, the Frome Captain, Richard, split up his rinks and played as triples with one fours rink.
The score at the end was very close, so a draw was declared on a sunny (but with a thunderstorm thrown in) afternoon. The score didn’t matter against a club with which Purnell has been associated for many years – always enjoyable company.
On Sunday, it was the J.T. Rosebowl named after the club’s previous President, John Tarrant, who was on hand as he is every year to hand out wine to the winners and runners-up. It was a really close encounter on the best afternoon so far for sun – all the men got out their white shorts with some of the old legs looking very dapper!
The winners’ on shot difference was Colin Toogood’s rink of ten-year-old Cameron Bowen, Dave (the dancer) Wyatt and Alan (cheese) Collins, who has made a welcome return to the club after fifteen years. Runners-up were Jim Towell’s rink of Teresa Hawkins, Carol Fordham and Roger Withey. After the presentations made by Mr Tarrant everyone tucked into a terrific Amercan Supper supplied by the players.
There are still places for new members – just turn up any night, all you need is a pair of trainers, as everything else will be found. For new members and bowlers that have not played for the past two years, membership is free for the first year. If anyone would like coaching, ring Don on: 01761 471019.
