So girls, how was your Mothering Sunday? Did you get chocolates? A bunch of flowers? Something sparkly? Or did your offspring treat you to a slap-up lunch or maybe a cream tea somewhere nice?

One thing is for sure, my Mother’s Day this year was certainly different: breakfast in bed and waited on hand, foot and finger – so nothing unusual there – but it wasn’t my lad doing the cosseting, oh no. Where was I? I was in the clinic and no, it wasn’t a fitness regime, it was a new hip – just in time for the new bowls season, so watch out girls, there will be no stopping me this year! I’ll be up and down the green like a whippet – not that my bowling will improve, but I’ll just be that much quicker.

By the time you read this, you’ll have had the Ladies’ spring meeting, and hopefully we’ll have a new Ladies’ Vice-Captain, so I’m sending my best wishes to whichever brave soul took the job on, and my apologies for not providing you all with the usual after-meeting cake.

Then on to Saturday, 17th and it’s our Subs evening: hopefully, providing all goes well at the clinic and I get them printed in time, Mary will be waiting with piles of the new 2018 fixture lists, eagerly waiting to gather in all your money.

To me, Subs evening always make it feel like things are rolling in the right direction, and with only five weeks left before the start of the season, it’s definitely time to get your bowling arm moving, your whites washed, your woods out and polished, with your shiny new stickers firmly fixed in place, all ready for action. Of course, it’s also a brilliant chance to catch up with fellow members who you maybe, haven’t seen since the end of last season.

I’m sure there will be lots of reminiscing over last season’s brilliant shots and a few tall tales about the unlucky ones which just pulled up short, but of course it was the run of the green and certainly no fault of your own!

And now just a final reminder: this will be the last date to pay your tour money – so come on, let’s keep Mary happy and pay up all our dues.
