Well here we go! Yes, we’re up and running for the 2018 season, Norwest members have been out on the green busily practising and brushing up their techniques in anticipation of the first games of the new season.

As usual, the first game for our lads was against their old friends and rivals, Fry’s, but this year things were a little different as they let the Ladies join in! Unfortunately, although it was a very enjoyable game, Fry’s took the honours, winning 84-69.

Sunday saw the sun shining for our annual Presidents’ Day competition, and although there was a nip in the air for the later stages of the competition, the atmosphere was warm throughout the game, with lots of laughter and much banter on the green.

This is always a favourite with Norwesters, maybe because of the random way the teams are selected, which means it could be anyone’s game – even one of our brand new players, of which we were pleased to welcome two: Penny and Steve. Unfortunately neither of our newbies won a trophy, but they both seemed to enjoy the afternoon and hopefully will enjoy lots more with us at Norwest.

It certainly was the President’s Day, as not only did Mary Harston, our President, host the event, but she also walked off with the trophy for ‘Winning Lady’, while the Men’s trophy went to old hand, Dave Hill. The infamous wooden spoons went to Cilla Rich and Robert Phillips, while the bottle of wine for the ‘spider competition’ was won by Brian Holmes. Nice one Brian, I’ll enjoy that!

Now for the thank yous: a huge thank you to the Ladies of the kitchen – Sue, Mary, Doris and Lin, and of course, their other halves, who helped with the fetching and carrying. Fantastic job, as usual. Thanks to Paul who organised us all, to Aaron who put out all the kit and also to all the bar staff, who kept the wheels oiled. Overall it turned out to be a brilliant afternoon, hopefully just one of many to come over the 2018 season. Talking of which, there are lots of fixture sheets up on the notice boards, so come on and get those names up.

And finally, I have to mention Jack, our youngest player, who recently went to the Taunton Deane school of excellence for bowling and did brilliantly. Well done, Jack!
