On Monday, the Somerset County Patrons joined us for our annual tussle for the Len Hilleard Trophy. It’s always a popular event, and inevitably a great evening. The game was hard fought and resulted in a 114 shot draw with Norwest retaining the trophy as last year’s winners.

After the game, the players all retreated into the clubhouse for a real treat in the form of a superb chicken dinner followed by apple pie and ice-cream supplied by Mary Coombes and her team of Sue Nott, Joan Hancock, Doris Kingman and Kath Hillman. Great job, girls! Congratulations go to Norwest’s Eddie Nott, Dave Hill, Eric Obern and Bill Brooks for the highest winning rink with a score of 28–6.

Our Ladies continue with their winning streak, albeit a little late in the season to make any difference to their league position, but does put a very positive spin on the start to next season. This week, they managed a win against the Ladies of the mighty Purnell’s Bowls Club in a Wild League game on Tuesday and won 8–4.

Unfortunately, our Thursday game was cancelled when Wyrall Park were unable to raise a team which was a great shame.

Our Men’s fortunes were not so good, as they lost their Floodlit Charity game against Purnell 3–2 on Wednesday evening. They have only one fixture left which is a friendly against our old friends at Alexandra Park on Saturday, so better luck next time, boys.

The weekend was a busy one at Norwest, when our bowlers gathered for the Finals Weekend of the club competitions. Congratulations go to all the winners, commiserations to the

runners-up and a great vote of thanks to all who turned up to support the bowlers. Your support was greatly appreciated and thanks go to Rex and Mike, who organised the whole thing.

And so to our last week this season, the Ladies have two more games while the Men only have one and then to round it all off, it’s Captain’s Day on Sunday. Fingers crossed for a fine day, but whatever, I’m sure it will be a great day as usual. So hopefully I’ll see you there all bright eyed, bushy tailed and raring to go for a great afternoon to end the season.

Last but not least, I have a few reminders: First, the Fish and Chip Skittle League starts on October 7th, so get your teams in training and don’t forget you don’t have to be a skittler, you can just come along for a couple of drinks and a bit of banter.

Secondly, the Presentation evening, this is on November 19th, but Mary would like your menu choices and your money by Captain’s Day, please.

Lastly, but no less importantly, the Ladies meeting is on October 8th, while the Men’s is on October 16th and the AGM is on November 6th. Please make an effort to support these meetings – after all, it’s your club, so come along and share your opinions and have your say as to its future.
