Thunder, lightning and torrential rain on Saturday evening did not bode well for Norwest Bowls Club’s away day trip to Weymouth the following day, and sure enough, we awoke to an overcast and rainy Sunday morning. Not to be deterred, members gathered at Norwest to mount our charabanc in good spirits, even if umbrellas and wellies were more the order of the day than buckets, spades or sun hats.
With water lying heavily on the roads, our trusty coach driver, Bill, steered us through the puddles until the sun came peeping from behind the clouds to stay with us for the rest of the day, turning a soggy start into a gloriously hot and sunny day.
After a morning spent sampling the delights of a very busy Weymouth, members headed off to join friends, old and new, at Greenhill Bowls Club, where they spent the afternoon enjoying, if not winning, a great game of bowls. The atmosphere on the green remained, like the weather, warm and sunny throughout, and the mood in the clubhouse after the game was amazing, with lots of banter and much laughter.
As with all good things, they come to an end, and it was with regret we once again boarded the coach for our return journey to Norwest. To Bill, our driver, from John Martin Coaches and all who organised the trip, we would like to say a huge thank you. And my personal thanks to Pat, who stood in for me at the last minute.
And now, back to earth and the results of the League games for the week: our Ladies continue to struggle, losing both their NSL games. The first, on Tuesday against Stothert and Pitt, was a 9–1 defeat, while on Thursday, against Purnell, who fielded a very strong side, we managed to get two of the ten points on offer. Meanwhile, the chaps’ fortunes were mixed. On Wednesday, in the MSL competition against Paulton, they took all sixteen points, while in the County League East on Saturday, with both teams playing at home, the A team lost 12–0 against Purnell B, while the B team won 12–0 against Bloomfield C.
Lastly, just a reminder: next Monday, 4th June, we will be welcoming the County Patrons for our 90th Anniversary game. It should be a great afternoon, so even if you’re not playing, just pop along to support the bowlers and enjoy the atmosphere.
