IN THE Croquet England (Southwest Federation) Golf Croquet Leagues, Camerton and Peasedown enter teams in all three categories; in Level Play, where no handicap advantages are used, and the two Handicap Leagues where players play against others of a similar standard.
CPCC’s Level Play team recorded a good win at home against Glamorgan in the last match of their 2025 season. It was a very close fought match, with no less than nine of the 20 games ending 7 hoops to 6.
The match started with two doubles, shared. Then in the first round of singles Colin Britt, Des Back and Brian Wilson all won to set up a 4-2 lead. CPCC hung on to the two game advantage for the next two rounds: 8-6. In the last round of singles, David Richards, Des Back and Colin Britt all won to extend the lead to an unbeatable 11-7. The last two doubles were lost.
This was a fine result considering Glamorgan had an average handicap of 1.75 compared with Camerton and Peasedown’s 2.5. Up to that point Glamorgan had won all their other matches; CPCC were therefore very pleased to get the 11-9 win.
Everyone in the team contributed at least one win, Colin Britt winning all his games. The star of the match was Des Back. He initially held the highest handicap of all the players and, after winning all three of his singles games, he earned a handicap reduction.
Captain, Colin Britt congratulated all the players who have represented the CPCC Level Play team this year, recording their two wins, two draws and only one defeat, this last being played on the roller coaster lawns of Broadwas CC. At final league positions; Glamorgan CC won the league with 8 points, CPCC and Broadwas finished with 6 points each but CPCC achieved second place losing only one match.
