A STRONG Camerton & Peasedown team hosted Weston-super-Mare on a beautiful early summer’s day - and gained a splendid win. CPCC's average handicap was 1.8; Weston's was 4.
Camerton and Peasedown got off to a storming start, winning their first seven games. By lunchtime the score was standing at 10-2. Even if CPCC lost all the afternoon games they would, at worst, draw the match.
A notable success in the morning session was David Milford who beat W-s-M's best player, gaining 17 handicap points.. Lunch was taken on the veranda overlooking the club’s fine lawns which had already received many positive comments from the visitors.
CPCC won the afternoon session by 6-2. Unfortunately, Colin Britt (CPCC’s strongest player), was narrowly beaten 6-7 by one of Weston-super-Mare’s weaker players. This happens from time to time and even the strongest player learns to take these defeats in their stride and with good grace.
CPCC Level Play team ran out winners by 16 games to 4 in their second match of the season. CPCC team was - Colin Britt (-1), Andy Loakes (-1), David Richards (1), David Milford (3), Mo Boys (4), Des Back (5).
In this match, at Level Play, the games were played ‘where the winner is the first to win seven hoops’ and each player started at zero.
CPCC also enters teams into the Southwest Federation Handicapped leagues where players, if they hold a high handicap, are awarded the advantage of ‘free’ hoops or, if they hold a low handicap, are challenged to win extra hoops.
In some cases the Leagues are only open to players within a restricted handicap band which always makes the games close and exciting. If you are a beginner, or have only played garden croquet, then the High Handicap League would be the one for you to try. To find out more visit https://camertonpeasedowncroquet.co.uk/.
