Norwest Ladies had two North Somerset League games this week. The first, on Tuesday, was against Bloomfield, where they managed to claim a 6–4 victory. On Thursday, they visited the Ladies of Keynsham on a very hot afternoon and an extremely fast green, but still managed a 5–5 draw.

The one bright spot for our Men was when the A Team visited Bloomfield on Saturday for their County East League game and came away with a 10–2 win. Unfortunately, the results for our other Men's games were not so good. On Wednesday, they met Wells for an MSL game, which they lost 13–3 and the B Team lost their Saturday league game, 8–4. On Friday, we met Purnell in a Mixed Mid-Somerset League game which also we lost, 8–4.

But, oh! What a great end to our week at Norwest. On Sunday, twelve teams descended on our green for our annual Jim Cowley Invitation Fours competition. We were extremely lucky with the weather, as along with some sunny spells, there were lots of ominous looking clouds overhead, but we managed to get away without donning our wets. It was a superb day with an absolutely great atmosphere and much banter, both on and off the green. We played two sessions of bowls in the morning, which were followed by a ham salad lunch then two further sessions of bowls in the afternoon. It was a very hard-fought contest which was not decided until the last wood was delivered, so well done to everyone who took part. We have lots of thank yous. Firstly, to Rex and Mike for organising the day, to Ann Woodham and her team for providing us with tea, coffee and a super lunch, to Ken and Paul, our barmen, to anyone else who helped and last but certainly not least, to our very generous friends at John Martin Coaches for once again sponsoring this event.

The winners were – Fourth place: 'Just Us', Bernie Reeves (Skip), Rita Reeves, Kath Harding and Merv Ashman (Bath Post Office), third place: 'The Triers', Jean Thomas (Skip), Eric Collins, Avis Heley and Ken Woodham (Norwest), second place: 'Purnells', Don Dart (Skip), Jan Dart, Graham Gullick and Jane Gullick (Purnells) and the winners, 'The Crazy Cranes', Brian Jenkins (Skip), Ann Jenkins, Robert Brookes and Pauline Brookes (Stothert and Pitts). Well done to all of you and to everyone who took part. We look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Now I have a couple of items of club business. Firstly, apologies for giving a wrong date in last week's write up. It's amazing how many people notice when I get something wrong!

Second, the notice for our away day to Windsor Great Park is up on the wall. It should be a great day out and places are limited, so get your name up now if you want to go. Give Eric a ring on: 01761 412904 if you want any more information. Who knows, you may even get to see The Queen!
