Midsomer Mavericks, Midsomer Norton Cricket Club’s Women’s cricket team, are preparing for the Somerset Cricket Board’s Women’s Softball Finals Day at Weston-super-Mare on Sunday, 8th July, when they will have the opportunity to play against the best women’s teams from across the county and – hopefully – come away with a trophy.
The Mavericks have made tremendous progress on and off the pitch in the twelve months since training sessions for women were first held at the club’s Withies Lane ground.
The Mavericks went through their 2018 normal season fixtures unbeaten – a great achievement for a team of players with little experience of playing the game before 2017. Winning matches is great for team morale and for the club, but the enthusiasm shown by players at the Thursday night training sessions provides a practical demonstration of what the game – and the team – means to the players.
The opportunities available to women cricketers are highlighted by the fact that Norton’s Lauren Bowen-Jones has played for the Somerset Women’s team this season.
Topping the table in the Somerset Cricket Board’s Mid-Somerset Division means that the Mavericks will take on the most successful teams from the North and South Somerset divisions on Sunday – teams like Brislington, Staplegrove and Taunton Deane.
The first games will take place at 10 a.m., and the Mavericks are hoping that they will have plenty of travelling support cheering for them on the day. Club Chairman, Graeme King, says: “We are very proud of the Mavericks and all members of the club wish them well on Finals Day.”
Women’s cricket training takes place on Thursday evenings (7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m.) at Midsomer Norton Cricket Club’s Withies Lane ground. For more information, contact Jennie at: [email protected]
