At Withies Lane last Saturday, Midsomer Norton returned to winning ways with a seven-wicket victory over Winterbourne.
Midsomer Norton won the toss and fielded first. The visitors were soon in trouble, losing their first wicket in the second over of the match. Chris Phylips took his second wicket of the match to dismiss the other opening bat and Winterbourne were 28–2.
Phylips’ new ball partner, Gary Filer, followed this with a brace of wickets himself and the visitors found themselves 55–4. None of the Winterbourne batters got the better of the home side’s bowlers and extras were joint top score with 25. Paul Robbins and Josh Sutton each picked up a brace of wickets and there was a wicket each for Jake Rowe and Nick Pang. Winterbourne were all out for 140.
The weather meant that the home side was set a revised target of 132 and apart from the early departure of opener, Paul Robbins, Midsomer Norton never looked like missing out. Nick Pang scored a typically forceful 38 from 31 balls before Nick Cox (27 not out) and Jake Rowe (53 not out) saw Midsomer Norton home in more sedate style to win by seven wickets, reaching their target before the end of the 30th over. Victory moves Midsomer Norton up to third place in the table and this Saturday the First XI travel to North Perrott.
The Seconds won a tight contest at Flax Bourton by just one wicket last Saturday. The visitors won the toss and put the home side into bat. Flax Bourton scored 166–6 from their forty overs. Opener Stokes scored 71, but extras (28) were the next best contributor. Mitchell Turner and Martin Cox took two wickets each, Harrison Veale and Charlotte Phillips one each.
Despite a half century opening partnership, wickets then fell steadily and Norton were 17 short with just one wicket to fall. Mitchell Turner (25 not out) and Charlotte Turner (undefeated on 1 not out) saw Norton over the finishing line to win by the narrowest of margins with just over two overs remaining. The Seconds host Bitton on Saturday.
The Third XI completed a hat trick of victories with a win at Pucklechurch. The visitors bowled the home side out for 131 and lost just two wickets chasing down the runs in less than 27 overs. This Saturday, the team is at home to Winterbourne.Charlie Matthews
