A strong finish to the season which saw them win seven of their last eight games has seen Timsbury Cricket Club earn a place in the top tier of the newly established Bristol and District Cricket League. The news was given by club skipper, Steve Clothier, at the club’s annual presentation night which this year was held in the clubroom.
Clothier looked back on a season that had seen periods of high and low fortunes. He saw the highlights as the tie at Chew Magna in the National Village Cup, the convincing home win against North Perrott in the same competition, Jack Scrivens’ hundred at Hanham and Mark Sage’s 210 not out against Cleeve in the amazing match that had seen Timsbury score 358 and still lose. For the first time in anyone’s memory not one league game had fallen foul to the weather. In looking to the future the captain who said he had enjoyed his first year in charge hoped that there would be an improvement in training sessions, more structured coaching and a stronger second eleven.
Club Chairman Austin Sage in his inaugural speech also said how much he had enjoyed his first year at the helm. He congratulated Clothier on an excellent season and said how good it was to see so many good young players beginning to emerge. One of the highlights was the introduction of the competition for under 19s which had seen the club reach the county finals at Weston-Super-Mare. He thanked all the youth coaches for their efforts, particularly Greg Passingham, which enabled the club to put teams out at every level. He then paid tribute to the many personnel in the club which helped it to run efficiently and thanked all the club sponsors. Flowers were presented to Ann Sage, Eve Bird, Rita Day, Betty Newth and Cheryl Bradley in recognition of their contributions to the club.
