It was another heart-breaking week for the Men in Writhlington Tennis’ First team, who needed some points against second-in-the-table, Knowle One. Patrick Lodge and Hamish O’Mahony fought hard in both their rubbers, but frustratingly, narrowly lost them both in three sets. We now need a good win against top-of-the-table Cleeve Hill in the last match.
The Seconds staged a remarkable comeback, having lost both rubbers in the first half and facing disaster against fellow relegation contenders, Knowle Four. All four players dug deep to carve a victory from defeat, which now makes Writhlington favourites to avoid the drop.
The Thirds, now safely mid-table, were expected to lose 10–0 against Almondsbury’s young guns, but Darren Thompson and Chris Cox pulled off a great win in three sets to salvage something from the fixture.
The Fourths sent a star-studded team, but the Olveston players played out of their skins and Writhlington came away with just two points and we now need a good win against fellow relegation fighters, Sodbury, next week.
The Fifths were handed a walkover by Winterbourne, who had several players pull out at the last minute. This guarantees the local team’s safety in the division.
Men’s results: 1sts lost 10–0 at Knowle, 2nds won 6–4 home to Knowle 4, 3rds lost 8–2 at Almondsbury, 4ths lost 8–2 at Olveston 4, 5ths won 10–0 home to Winterbourne 3 (walkover).
Writhlington Ladies had a very successful week, with all teams coming home with a win.
The Firsts continue with their unbeaten track record which makes them champions of Division 2B, guaranteeing Division One tennis next season as we head into the final week of the Summer Season!
The Seconds travelled to Abbeywood School in very blustery conditions and came back with a strong 8–2 win over Central III to keep them in third position in their
Division and although promotion is now just out of reach, they are comfortably out of the relegation zone.
Our Thirds had an exceptional evening, only losing six games in total over eight sets and with A pairing, Tracey Stephens and Marie Craig, achieving their first quadruple bagel (6–0 6–0, 6–0 6–0). This leaves the thirds in a stronger position, but may need some points next week to avoid relegation.
Ladies results: 1sts won 8–2 home to DL Bristol 2, 2nds won 8–2 at Central 3, 3rds won 10–0 home to Olveston.
Next Friday is the last match of the Summer League season and all squad players are invited to the Fromeway after the matches for a buffet and the season’s round-up.
