This was a disappointing result for Welton, who huffed and puffed but never really performed as they have in the past against a strong, determined Wincanton team.
The home side were first in action and a shot from Ren Turnock flew past the Welton post. Welton's first effort of the game was a long-range shot from central defender, Carl Stone, that caught the wind and was saved by a backtracking Jonny Hill in the Wincanton goal. Welton continued to press and a cracking 25-yard shot from Chris Peck saw Hill save well. At the other end, Ritchie Chandler saved Welton with a last ditch tackle to deny Matt Chant. The home side were lively going forward, with their runners putting pressure on the Welton defence. Good work in midfield by Andy Keen set up Tom Smith and his 25-yard shot was saved by Hill.
The game was threatening to boil over, so referee, Finean, called both Captains over and told them to calm it down. A curling shot from Wincanton Captain, Matt Peters, rolled along the length of the Welton bar. Just before the half-time whistle, Welton keeper, Andy King, pulled off an outstanding save.
The second half began with good work by Welton's Ben Harris down the right, he found Peck in space, turned and fired in a cracking shot that went inches over the bar. The home side then had three corners on the trot as the pressure mounted and Welton were being tested by long throws. Wincanton's Gavin Chapman was then booked for a challenge on Byron Lismore. Harris then found Peck in the Wincanton box and the Welton Captain's overhead kick was pushed away for a corner.
Wincanton took the lead on seventy minutes when a long throw from Holmes was met by Peters, who headed the ball past a group of players into the Welton net. Minutes later, Chapman received his second yellow card of the game and was sent off for bringing down Harris. Welton pressed for the equaliser and three minutes from time were rewarded when a long ball from the left by Dan Scrivens was met by Lismore on a charge and his bullet header flew into the net. Welton should have shut up shop, but, in the fifth minute of added time, another long throw from Holmes landed in the mix and Matt Chant bundled the ball into the Welton net.
