After last week’s disappointing loss away from home, the Men’s First Team wanted to give skipper Max Spalton a proper send-off with a win, with the Captain travelling to Australia with work for the next few months.

When Mendip travelled to Bridgwater at the beginning of the season, they were frustrated after letting a lack of discipline let the lead slip away to lose. Bridgwater started the day three points ahead in the league for added impetus.

In front of a good home crowd, Mendip started brightly with fast paced attacking play. The Yellow’s attack peppered the Bridgwater goal, but the keeper stood strong and pulled off some immense saves. Likewise, in the opposite net, John Carroll made some crucial saves to keep it all square at half-time.

In the second half the entertainment continued. A real battle on the pitch from both sides but both struggled to have that clinical edge. In what could have been a decisive moment, a penalty flick was awarded to Mendip and top goalscorer, Harry Ellison stepped up to take it. The keeper again pulled off a masterful save to deny Mendip.

With little left to play, eventually Mendip found some fortune, Harry Ellison redeeming his earlier penalty miss to take his tally to fifteen so far this season. 1-0 the final score, Mendip continued their 100% record at home and leapfrog Bridgwater to fourth in the table.

Away from home, the Men’s 2’s faced Bristol and West after last week’s postponement. A closely contested game, nothing could separate the two sides with the final score 2-2. Will Holmes and George Smith picking up Mendip’s goals to take their totals to 6 and 5 respectively.
