The Farrington Park Ladies’ 2022 golfing season will finish soon with their AGM in October but before that they have been busy playing several trophy competitions in the last ten days.

Mara’s Morning is a qualifying Stableford competition. The wet weather of the previous week had given way to beautiful autumnal sunshine and thirty-nine players entered to play in memory of former member Mara Sheppard and maybe, take a rest on her memorial bench seat by the tenth tee. Scoring was good with most players scoring more than 30 points although only two two-spot birdies were scored at the par 3 holes by Brenda Michael at the 10th and Sue Forshaw at the 15th. Three players scored 37 points, so countback was employed to determine the minor places. Laura Fox took second place ahead of Denise Baker and Sandra Hares. The Mara’s Morning winner with a fine score of 39 points and earning herself a handicap cut, was Corrina Bates.

The Committee Cup played as a Four Ball Better Ball off an 85% handicap attracted eighteen teams to play in the continuing fine weather of early autumn. Links-like conditions were still prevailing on the Duchy course and the scoring from the competing pairs was very high.

Sue Forshaw is becoming something of a birdie specialist at the par 3 15th hole as she recorded a birdie there for the second week in a row. Lo Dallocco had a two-spot birdie at the par 3 8th.

Fourteen teams scored 40 points or more, but only scores in the high forties had a chance of any prizes. Maureen Taylor and Sue Barnes scored 46 points to take third place. Sue Forshaw and Issey Panton scored steadily on the front 9 before scoring an average of nearly 3 points a hole on the back 9 to score a total of 47 points and the possibility of a win.

However, the winners Sue Skyrme and Jackie James had already finished their round. Although they had the same score, countback determined that their blistering back 9 score of 27 points which included birdies at the par 5 11th and 18th holes from Jackie and a birdie at the par 4 “drop-hole” 12th from Sue, meant they won the Committee Cup by the narrowest of margins.
