This tournament took place in Purnells' Sports Youth Football Club grounds in Paulton and was organised by Claire Burton, the Tournament Director, and Dave Hayward, Chair of Purnells Sports Youth Football Club.
The tournament started at 9 a.m. and finished at 6 p.m., giving many families a very enjoyable day out as they supported their youngsters playing football. Liz Hardman, B&NES Councillor, Paulton, commented: "It was great to see such an age range from the under-eights to sixteen-year-olds and to see opportunities for girls as well as boys to play football."
Young people from under eight-years-old to sixteen participated in this celebration of football skills. Not only were young lads playing, but in the afternoon, there were two divisions for girls, under-fifteen and under-thirteen, and it is planned to have a girls' under-ten team for the first time ever.
Dave Hayward, Chair of Purnells' Sports Youth Club, said: "This tournament has been running for four years and a lot of hard work goes into organising it. All the people involved are volunteers, but everyone enjoys it."
All the money raised goes back into the club and helps keep costs down for hiring pitches. Training at Purnells Sports Club is on a Saturday morning, with some midweek training for the under-sixteens at Writhlington, on the astro turf. Glyn Young and Colin Green are Joint Managers of the Purnells' Sports Youth Team Under-Eights. Glyn commented: "It is really pleasing to be the Manager of the under-eight team and see the kids enjoying themselves and to get the parents involved. All under-eight players get a participation medal, which emphasises that it's not just the winning, but the taking part that is important."
