A swirling wind made it difficult for Paulton to defend in the first half against Dunstable Town. A third minute miss by Dunstable striker, Lee Roache, when he should have scored, set the scene.
Rovers’ Dave O’Hare had a shot deflected and then Roche again broke through and hit the side netting.
Darren Mullings won a header for Paulton and Kyle Tooze’s shot was blocked.
The visitors missed another good chance when Gary Wharton and Chris Vardy combined and should have finished better. Leon Jeanne threatened down the home right and fed Josh Morgan-Williams, who wasted his chance.
Victor Osobu cut in from the left for Town and his lob was deflected. The corner on the left was taken by right back, Steve Wales, whose cross caught in the wind and clipped the far post and went into the net. Roche missed another great chance in added time after a good one-two with Osobu.
Rovers pushed forward from the start of the second half and Tooze, Mullings and Jeanne had a neat move before Osobu responded and broke round John, only for Brown to get back and clear.
Wharton had a similar chance this time when John cleared with his foot. The Duns grabbed a second when Connor Colcutt headed home from another Wales corner after 68 minutes.
Rovers got back in the game two minutes later as Grimshaw was fouled and Jeanne chipped in a lovely free kick. Wharton was again prevented from scoring by John’s foot and substitute, Tom Knigton, had a late effort for Paulton.
Late in the game, Aaron Brown was shown a red card for what appeared an innocuous foul on Wharton.
Star Man of the Match went to Darren Mullings, (Paulton Rovers).
Tuesday’s game at Cirencester had to be rearranged in the New Year, as Paulton’s opponents played Truro City in an FA Trophy replay.
