Welton’s dismal run of results continued in North Bristol, when they were undone by a combination of second half errors and an inability to finish off promising moves.
Welton gave youngster, Charlie Phillips, his first team debut in goal, and he was called into action early on when he confidently dealt with a long throw into the area by Tom Sellars for Roman Glass. Minutes later, the young keeper saved well and low down to deny Josh Morris. The home side continued to press, and good play down the right by Jacob Watson saw him pull back his cross and the ball fell to Sellars in space on the edge of the Welton area, but he could only fire his shot high over the Welton bar.
Welton eventually got going and were awarded a free kick by referee, Rodd, thirty yards out from the Roman Glass goal. Up stepped Charlie Babb, and his well placed kick looked certain to be going in at the near post, but a superb save at full stretch by Glass keeper, Phil Mills, denied Welton. Babb then went close with a header, and full back Dan Veal’s effort went close for the visitors.
Welton continued to press, and a tremendous effort from Jackson Hamilton saw Mills produce a fingertip save to deny Welton an opening goal. As half-time approached, Welton were dealt a body blow when another long throw from Sellars saw the ball land amongst a melee of players in the mix and it hit Morris and crept over the line to give Roman Glass an unexpected half-time lead.
Roman Glass brought on Jason Burt for the injured Andrew Hamilton-Dunn and straight from the restart, Glass attacked down the right. A ball into the middle wasn’t dealt with by Welton and substitute Burt’s first touch was to slot the ball into the Welton net.
Welton brought on striker, Aaron Seviour, and his first action saw him race through the Roman Glass defence and calmly place his shot into the far corner of the goal past keeper, Mills, to pull one back from Welton. A minute later, Seviour was at it again when he broke through the defence, this time Mills raced off his line and Seviour’s delicate lob went inches wide of the goal.
Roman Glass got a third on the sixtieth minute when hesitation in the Welton defence saw the ball fall to Lewis Wentland, who made no mistake with his effort. Welton’s day went from bad to worse when a poor clearance fell straight to Kris Douglas, and he fired home from twenty yards to seal Welton’s fate.
