With Tuesday, 13th February as World Radio Day, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has invited all radio stations and supporting organisations to join them for the chance to strengthen diversity, peace and development through sports broadcasting. The theme this year is ‘Sports and Radio’.
UNESCO said about the event: “As we look forward to a year of momentous sporting events that have the ability to unite the hearts and minds of people everywhere, we call on all radio stations around the world to showcase the beauty of sport in all of its diversity.
“Let’s celebrate the traditional sports that connect us to our cultural heritage, the grassroots sports that anchor us within our communities, and the inspiring stories that challenge gender stereotypes and cover, equally, both men’s and women’s sports events.”
Experienced Western League commentator and podcast broadcaster, Ian Nockolds, has been approached by UNESCO to help promote the power of radio and sport. In the past, he has commentated for radio, accompanied by visually-impaired fans, who were able to enjoy the match atmosphere whilst listening to every kick of the ball.
Ian and the Toolstation Western League have got together to offer the chance for any visually-impaired fans from one lucky club the opportunity to have a game covered with a full audio commentary. It will be produced in a radio style, but with a difference, as the commentator will be broadcasting to visually-impaired fans, sitting with him at the game.
Any club which has visually-impaired fans and who would welcome the opportunity to join an experienced commentator for a full audio description of a Western League game, should contact Ian Nockolds on: 07817 484955 or [email protected].
The club will be chosen on the number of fans able to benefit and the logistical practicalities of covering the game. Any further questions should be directed to Ian at the contact details above.
