PAULTON ROVERS U18s 3 WELTON ROVERS U18s 5

Paulton started well, with Jake Curtis one-on-one with keeper, Josh Matthews, who put the ball out for a throw-in.

Welton took the lead from a rebound which was slotted past Sean Salter by Tyler Kingman.

Paulton looked to regain ground, with Jake Curtis and Blaine Lawrence having chances saved. They then equalised in the 35th minute, with Tyler Lane’s cross meeting the head of Lawrence and into the top left-hand corner. The home side then regained the initiative, with Curtis and Lawrence having chances saved.

Five minutes before half-time, Lawrence put Rovers into the lead with Curtis’ cross being converted. He doubled the lead three minutes later, as he ran past Matthews and slotted into an open goal to get his hat-trick.

Ten minutes into the second half, Welton got one back, with James Rawlings heading past Salter. They got their equalising goal in the 66th minute, with Captain, Jacob Brooks-Scully, heading in. Five minutes later, they got their fourth, thanks to Brooks-Scully, again with a header.

With five minutes to go, Salter limped off injured after coming together with a Welton player, and Ali Sen replaced him in goal for the last nine minutes. Welton scored their final goal, with Iwan Tudor striking the ball into the top left-hand corner past Sen.

As well as a Somerset Floodlit Youth Match, the game was played for the Bert West Cup. It is 25 years since the Cup was first played for, after being donated by the West Family. Bert West played for both clubs and was on Paulton Rovers’ committee when he died, 26 years ago.
