The featured match in the Premier League this week was Coleford versus Peasedown Albion, and what a game it turned out to be! A great advert for the Mid-Somerset Football League.
After ten minutes, Coleford’s Jack Davis rounded the Peasedown goalkeeper and hit the post, while Rico Sobers for the visitors had a good shot that just cleared the crossbar. On 25 minutes, Jack Davis curled a free-kick into the top corner to put the home team in front. Making it 2-0 by half-time, Andy Burns headed in from close range from a good cross by Dan Reynolds.
Three minutes after the restart, a mix-up in the visitors’ defence allowed Jack Davis to slot the ball under the advancing goalkeeper and into the net to make the score 3-0. Rico Sobers then tapped in at the far post to reduce the arrears on 50 minutes; he then headed in a good left-wing cross to make it 3-2.
Scott Baker pounced on a lost ball to bring the scores level at 3-3, and on 75 minutes, Craig Dowling finished off some good football by the visitors, shooting across the home goalkeeper into the corner of the net to put Peasedown Albion in front for the first time, 4-3. The same player then scored a terrific free-kick to make it 5-3 – what a turn round by the Albion!
A great volley from Coleford’s Mat Fisher brought it back to 5-4, which set up a hectic last ten minutes, with Peasedown Albion hanging on for the three points, keeping them top of the Premier League.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Frome Collegians picked up all three points against Westfield, 3-2; amongst the goals for the home team were Adam Lock, Tony Knap and Lee Handford, and for the visitors, Tom Lakeman and sub, Tom Davey. Meanwhile, Pilton really went to town at Victoria Street, winning 8-0, and Westhill beat Radstock A 1-0 – the only goal was scored by Jack Broadway.
In the First Division, Clutton Res at home beat Timsbury Res, 3-1, and Wells A had a good win away to Somer Valley, 2-1, where the home team scorer was Lee Champion.
There was just one game in the Third Division: Peasedown A went away to Chilcompton United and won 2-0, with goals from Mark Gould and a penalty from Lee Gould.
In the Somerset Intermediate Cup, the League has the following teams going through to the next round: Coleford Res, Belrose, Peasedown Albion Res, Farrington Gurney, Chilcompton Res, Evercreech, High Littleton, Mendip Rangers, Weston FC, Saltford Res and Frome Collegians Res. Well done to all, please keep the League flag flying!
