What a wet and windy day on Saturday, but it didn’t stop Purnell Sports and Coleford putting on a great, competitive game of football.

Coleford had to really fight hard in the first half, facing the slope, wind and rain. They must have been pleased to get to half-time 0-0.

The second half proved a much more even contest, with the home team fighting for their lives to keep the visitors at bay, which they did very effectively. Their first attack, in the 50th minute saw, Jamie Barns all alone – he had to dive along the ground to head the ball into the empty net.

Coleford huffed and puffed, but could find no way through the home defence. It was wrapped up for the home team when Dave Beecham headed in a great cross to make it 2-0 on 75 minutes.

The last two weeks, Purnell Sports have taken maximum points from two of the fancied teams – Peasedown Albion and now Coleford – taking them up to fifth in the League. Frome Collegians started to climb the Premier League with a convincing 5-1 home win against Radstock A, thanks to hat-trick from Lewis Perrett and goals from Morgan Marsh and Josh Butler.

The League sent President, Brian Wells, along to watch Westfield Res play Westhill Sports, with a goal for the home team and one from Ben Grubb for the

visitors, making the scoreline 1-1. Brian said it was a pleasure to watch a game played in the right spirit, and one that was refereed to a very high standard by Martin Veater.

In the First Division, Peasedown Albion Res made up some ground on the leaders, winning at home against bottom team, Meadow Rangers, 6-0. The top team, High Littleton, drew at Evercreech, 2-2, and second-place Chew Magna Res drew 3-3 with Timsbury Res.

The visitors must have thought they had it won twice, leading 2-0 and 3-1, with goals from Justin Dowling, ‘Fordy’ and Noah Millard. The home side fought back, and getting their goals were Matt Bedford, Chris Willway and Seb King.

Wessex consolidate their position at the top of the second Division, beating Timsbury A at home, 7-1. Amongst the goals were Lee Gooding (2), Alex Porddice (2), Dan Linham, Elliot Carfield and Ben Palmer. Joe Hallett scored the consolation goal for the visitors, and ‘Slugger’, the Timsbury goalkeeper, was named Man of the Match.

Weston Bath stay third in the League after a hard-fought 1-0 win away to Glastonbury Res. Meanwhile, Stoke Rovers are fifth in the table, winning at Westhill Sports Res, 4-1.

Only one game in the Third Division took place – Pilton Res go back to the top of the League, after a 3-0 win away to Westfield A.
