It was the League’s first Cup Final of the season last Friday, and the Shepton Mallet groundsman did a superb job in getting the pitch ready for this Baxter Shield Final between Evercreech and Peasedown Albion Res.

A large crowd was in attendance to witness this game, which only came to life just before half-time, when a free-kick from Kieran Thick cleared the Peasedown defence. Ryan Chinnock then ran through to head the ball past the stranded goalkeeper, putting Evercreech 1-0 at the break.

The second half was an even affair. Peasedown levelled the scores after fifteen minutes with a well-taken goal by Haydon Campbell, rifling the ball into the roof of the net.

This spurred on Evercreech, and they were rewarded with what proved to be the winner, another set piece free-kick found Stuart Vaughan unmarked, who headed home.

Rob Beale, the League’s Fixture Secretary, presented the medals to the players, and Brian Wells presented the Man of the Match award to Evercreech captain, Ryan Chinnock.

Peasedown Albion are in the final of the Somerset Intermediate Cup Final, after beating another Mid-Somerset team, Weston Bath, away 6-2 in the Semi-Final. It took the League One team Peasedown 25 minutes to break down the home defence, with Rico Sobers sprinting away to prod the ball home, which just crossed the line.

More goals followed from Dan Hucker and Dan Mitchell. In the second half, more goals were scored by Hayden Campbell (2) and Aaron Vine to put the visitors into the final, where they will play Watchet Res.

The Mid-Somerset League are represented in both Somerset County Cup Finals, Frome Collegians in the Junior Cup and Peasedown Albion in the Intermediate Cup – it wasn’t to be last year that the league would win both cups, but we are hoping it is going to be this season – no pressure, lads!

Frome Collegians are keeping up their quest to be Premier League champions, winning away to Mells 7-1. Scoring for the visitors were Adam Lock with a hat-trick, Morgan Marsh (2), Theo Sing and Chris Gate.

Victoria had a great home 3-0 win against last year’s champions, Coleford; second place Westhill Sports won away to Temple Cloud, 4-0, and Radstock A moved up to third in the league, beating Purnell Sports Res, 6-0.

Pilton United move seven points clear at the top of the First Division, winning at home against Meadow Rangers 3-1. There were ten goals at Chilcompton vs Bath Villa, the visitors coming out on top 6-4, and bottom club, Belrose, recorded their third win of the season at home against High Littleton, 2-1.

In the Second Division, Timsbury Res missed the chance to pull further away at the top of the league, failing to beat Westhill Sports Res away. The home team running out 2-1 winners, their goals were scored by Conner Liddard and Adam Brooks.

What’s happened to Wessex after a promising start to the season? They have fallen away of late, only managing ten players at Coleford Res – the home team winning 2-0. The scorers were Adam Cray and Farnham Simmonds.

Stoke made it hard-going at home against bottom club Pilton Res in Division Three, falling over the line 3-2. This puts them only two points behind leaders, Weston.

It’s the big final at Shepton Mallet this Friday, 23rd March at 7.30 p.m. This season’s top premier team at the moment, Frome Collegians, take on last year’s league winners, Coleford, which looks to be a great match. Bryn Hawkins
