Former Bristol City and Bristol Rovers goalkeeper, Steve Phillips, has joined up with the England Veterans team for the third consecutive year, as the side look to retain their World Seniors’ title.
The Seniors’ World Cup was initially conceived by the Senior Football Association of Thailand, to promote tourism in the wake of the tsunami. Since 2006, the tournament has become an annual event, held in a different province of Thailand each year. In recent years, the tournament has evolved considerably, with many countries fielding ex-professional and some ex-international players.
England have won the tournament four times, including twice in the last two years.
Steve Phillips said: “It’s great to be back with the squad, and I think we have a chance of winning again this year. The strongest teams will be Iran, Scotland and Australia, [who] were good last year, but I think we’ve got a chance. We’ve got a lot of experience; we’re feeling good and I can’t wait!”
