Paulton won a highly entertaining end to end affair only marred by a harsh red card to each side in added time.
Rovers introduced Sierra Leone-born keeper Alhaji Sesay on loan from Bristol City, who went on to have an impact for his new club. Sesay has played in most of City’s U23s games this season.
Paulton’s early pressure paid off, as Dale Evans’ right-wing corner was firmly headed home by defender Joe Chandler. Chandler was then immediately called on to show his defensive strength clear from ’The Magpie’s’ striker, Toby Holmes.
Josh Morgan-Williams was linking up with Jack Ball as Rovers pressed, but Wimborne were dangerous on the break, although no end product. Josh Cann floated a free kick which Chandler headed narrowly wide. Guest and Evans were working hard to create chances for Paulton.
Sesay twice showed his class, racing out to smother a pass destined for Toby Holmes, whilst Luke Holmes was stopped by a sound tackle from Rovers’ skipper Josh Ford.
Evans free kick on 58 minutes should have been headed home by Ball as the home side pressed to add to the scoring. Toby Holmes had a great chance to level, but his shot from Luke Burbidge’s corner missed the target.
Substitute Dave Sims broke down the right, and his volley was parried away by Wimborne keeper, Rhys Evans. As the end of the game approached, Sesay brilliantly and instinctively saved on the line from a shot by Jack Lovell.
Chandler and Ford were at the heart of keeping the Rovers clean sheet, and in extra-time, a melee involving a number of players describe best as ’handbag’s’ was determined by the officials as red cards for Paulton’ Evans and Wimborne centre-half Matty Oldring – a decision which astonished everyone from both sides.
Sponsors man of the match: Joe Chandler, Paulton Rovers.
