A thrilling weekend for Purnell Sports Club saw both the U12 and U14 girls teams with a cup!

Purnells U12 Girls traveled to the Final knowing victory over their local rivals, High Littleton, would give them the League and Cup double.

The game started with both teams seemingly nervous of the occasion, and the crowd were not witnessing the free-flowing, expansive football of the teams’ previous meetings.

Purnell took the lead midway through the first half in fortunate circumstances; a brave header from the High Littleton defender flew into the back of the net for an unfortunate opening own-goal.

This seemed to spark High Littleton into life, who mounted a series of attacks on the Purnell defence – one of which forced an excellent save from the Purnell keeper.

As the first half drew to an end, more High Littleton pressure resulted in a corner, and the short training ground routine came off with a goal and a well-deserved equaliser at the break.

Purnell started the second half at a ferocious pace and regained the lead with a wonderful team goal – sharp, crisp passing ending with a smart finish.

High Littleton searched for a response but were hit with an excellent counter-attacking third goal. As Purnell seemed to ease up through the gears, they added another superb team goal towards the end of the match to run out worthy winners in an enthralling Final.

Elsewhere at the weekend, Purnell Sports U14 girls met Pen Mill in the Somerset Cup Final.

Purnell started the first half with grit and determination, and the defence of Maia, Tilly, Ellie, Lisa and Libby kept Pen Mill at bay.

The girls started the second half in high spirits, and took a deserved lead when Alice slotted home. Purnell continued to dominate Pen Mill, and it wasn’t long before Jasmine made it 2-0.

A lapse of concentration allowed Pen Mill to get a goal back, but Purnell rallied round and pressure for the midfield and forwards led to a scrappy second goal for Jasmine.

Purnell maintained their pressure, and some great football led to Monica scoring the fourth goal. With ten minutes to go, Pen Mill scored to make it 4-2, but Purnell held firm to take home the Cup. Player of the Match went to Maia for a fantastic display at left-back.
