Paulton Rovers came from behind with two goals in two minutes last Saturday to keep their unbeaten run in 2016 going.

Jonny McNamara was a tricky opponent down the visitors’ right and after he was fouled, Ben Walster’s free kick was met by Alasan Ann, whose shot was deflected away. Rovers’ central defenders, Alex Grimshaw and Josh Ford, were on top of the Canaries’ attack, sniffing out the usually dangerous Brett Donnelly. Dave O’Hare dribbled through the Hitchin defence and his shot was parried by keeper, Charlie Horlock and cleared by Ann for a corner. O’Hare had another goal-bound shot deflected for a corner taken by Aaron Brown on the right and O’Hare should have done better with his header.

On the stroke of half-time, McNamara broke down the right and his cross was flicked home by Donnelly. Leon Jeanne tracked back to stop much sought after right back, Kane Smith, as Hitchin pressed to add to their lead.

After 66 minutes, Rovers were level. Mario Mateus, a second half substitute, was fouled by Josh Bickerstaff and from 22 yards out, Jeanne planted a superb free kick into the top left hand corner of Horlock’s net.

Two minutes later, Paulton went ahead as Steve Williams played a ball down the right, chested by Mateus into the path of Kelvin Douglas, who slipped the ball past Horlock.

On 76 minutes, Ann fastened onto the ball and drove a dipping volley which Rovers’ keeper, Ben John, tipped over.

A great win for Tony Ricketts’ men only soured by a late injury to O’Hare.

Star Man of the Match was Josh Ford (Paulton Rovers).
