Wells defended for the first 25 minutes and were grateful to keeper Mike Dangerfield for saves from Josh Morgan-Williams, Dave Sims, Jack Ball and Joe Hillard.

Rovers went ahead as Morgan-Williams cut in on the left and found James Byrne, who laid the ball into the path of Liam Monelle to stroke home.

Paulton pressed and were rewarded after 41 minutes, as Josh Cann broke down the left crossed for Ball to lay the ball back to Sims, to beat Dangerfield to go in 2-0 at halftime.

The terential rain was leaving the pitch very heavy and boggy down the middle, and Wells wasted a great chance as Toby Jones blasted over, and Darren Maynard’s cross was then deflected. Byrne then had a headed goal rule offside and Ball brought yet another save by Dangerfield.

On the hour, Wells were awarded a penalty only, for Harry Davidson to drive over the crossbar. Rovers’ stopper Liam Armstrong, on loan from Bristol Rovers, was rarely in trouble and made one quality save.

On 76 minutes, it was 3-0 as Monelle found Ball for the striker to thump home.

Sims then hit the post twice, and with six minutes left, Morgan-Williams scored the goal of the night, cutting in from the left and volleying home a delightful chip giving Dangerfield no chance.
